Moscow Subway bombing

Travel changes your view of the world–each place you visit leaves an image in your mind and an awareness of that place.  One of those places from our travels is the subway in Moscow, which we visited during our Moscow-to-St.Petersburg River Cruise.  The subways are places of beauty in Moscow, filled with art and elegance.  The opportunity to ride it was a great experience.

Now, to hear of the terrible bombings there, and to be able to visualize that place and the people, makes it even more real and tragic.  We are connected more deeply through a common experience of place.  My heart goes out to those killed or injured and their families, and to the Russian people as they face this terror.

Grouse Mountain, Vancouver BC

Grouse Mountain in Vancouver, BC is a primary site in the Winter Olympics, providing some beautiful scenes on television.  Our travelers have some fond memories of a visit to Grouse Mountain, as well.

During one of our visits to Vancouver, we had planned a dinner on Grouse Mountain, and it turned out to be magical.  We had several people with us who had not been in Vancouver, let alone in the snow, for a very long time.  So, on a rainy March evening, we boarded the Skyride Gondola to the top of the mountain.  As we watched Vancouver shrinking below us, the rain slowly began to turn to snowflakes.  And more snowflakes!

Arriving at the top, we found a winter wonderland.  Enjoying a lovely meal in a private room, cozy with a fireplace, and  a wall of windows to the outside, we watched the illuminated snow fall outside.  It was one of those magical evenings of comfortable companionship in a group, transported to another place and time.  And unforgettable.

Katie the Rottweiller

One of my favorite pictures was Katie, the Rottweiller, enjoying a trip in the ‘Ute in Australia.  She sure loved to survey the property from her perch back there.  And I was amazed to get a photo of her so well focused–that ute isn’t exactly a smooth ride!

Unforgettable South Africa

My first time in Africa, a Collette Vacations tour to South Africa in September 2009, was filled with unforgettable, “pinch me” moments.  We had a terrific group of travelers with the First Church Travelers, representing Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, and Georgia, and one of the best guides we’ve had anywhere, Gerhardt Nel.

Standing at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa was one of those moments making you stop to realize you were really there.  As children, could any of us have imagined that we would ever actually stand at the Cape of Good Hope?

I think there are moments in every trip that are worthy of stopping to simply contemplate the magic of being there.  (And would that be worth doing every day, no matter where we are?)  What a gift.

Made richer in sharing with my fellow travelers.

More photos and stories of Africa to come!
